I believe that the human imagination is the key to solving all of our problems, just as a scientist might. However, I am an artist/designer (not a scientist) who uses his imagination as a form of expression, and as a creative director I use my imagination and creative process to also solve problems. Business problems. More specifically, in marketing. I think marketing is really the center of any organization which offers any type of product or service for sale (consumption). Marketing to me, holds the elements that need to be nurtured, and possibly the most important of them is creativity.
Creativity encompasses the imagination, which includes psychology, sociology, and even biology if you break it down further (like chemistry and the pure abilities of the senses ). Even further, you could argue that creativity crosses into the metaphysical, and is really at the core of the ability to think abstractly. Creativity is something that everyone possesses and you can use it to either create or digest (make or captivate). Creativity connects everyone, and it’s power doesn’t really seem to know or have limitations. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, what your gender, race, or religious beliefs are… creativity is not biased.
Being in marketing for 15 years as a creative has not only given me the opportunity to be a creator, but a creator who tries to understand how my own imagination will be digested by others. I always strive for clarity in my work, and I tend to at least try to give people something to think about (even if they don’t see something the first time around), whether it is in the copy/audio or the visuals, or just how they dance together. In other words I like to create things that are impactful and thought provoking, without being provocative ;)
8.5 years of my marketing career has been spent as an in-house creative (between two different companies). I have worked closely with teams big and small, I have been able to collaborate with clients, sales people, UI/UX designers, IT teams, copywriters, customer support teams, rights/legal departments, PR, editorial departments, and of course worked with other marketing team members (including other designers, photographers and videographers) on B2B (many fortune 500 companies) and B2C marketing projects and campaigns.
Some of the other elements that I think are crucial to marketing include clear communication, trust (buy-in on creative direction and feedback), and integrity. When marketing initiatives depend on collaboration across organizational departments the process isn’t always as easy as it could be. Luckily for me I’m a strong believer in integrity, which to me includes work ethic and knowledge on subject matter. In my experience, when creativity is presented along side with your integrity slapped on the table, then things become a bit easier (unless you are working with extremely difficult people).
As I mentioned earlier, I am a strong advocate for the value of design and the value of designers. It has taken me years to realize how important of a roll being a creative is, and the impact design makes on peoples lives (and businesses) on a daily basis, and how often design and designers are taken for granted. It took just as long to become an advocate for myself and others. Can you imagine a world without well thought out design, creativity, and creative problem solving? I think it would be a complete mess and probably really boring. I guess that’s why I have chosen to do what I do.
